Video Research with Dog Lovers at Crufts!

Capturing authentic, real-time responses from pet owners proved to be an effective way to gain insight into consumer decision-making and behaviours. Vox pop video research is the perfect way to access consumer opinion. Pet product companies in food and insurance can use the insight from the vox pop video to better understand their target audience and inform product development and marketing strategies.

Branded as ‘The World’s Greatest Dog Show’ and attracting around 8.7 million viewers, Crufts is an annual dog show organised by The Kennel Club. We were picked as a video partner to not only capture the atmosphere, but conduct vox pop video research with attendees and dog lovers.

We interviewed attendees to capture important consumer insight about the pet industry, as well as consumers who were fans of certain sponsors, to create an informative brand for them too, such as Royal Canin and Butternut Box.

Consumer Insight

The pet industry is a major consumer goods sector, with constantly shifting consumer preferences and trends. Being at Crufts gave us a targeted audience of dog lovers, making it easy to recruit and the best way to ask targeted questions.

We asked Crufts attendees questions on three key topics: pet food, pet insurance, and where they make their purchases. The goal was to understand their buying habits, product preferences, and attitudes toward pet care.

Pet Food

The primary focus for consumers was matching foods to their dogs’ specific needs, which was tied to quality. Pet owners prioritised avoiding cheaper food options and cereals. For dogs with unique breeds or health concerns, many sought vet recommendations and consulted websites like ‘All About DogFood’.

“I pay more attention to ingredients than to price.”

Pet Insurance

With rising costs, consumers are increasingly hesitant to invest in pet insurance. Many attendees were setting up separate savings accounts or credit cards to cover their dogs’ healthcare expenses if necessary.

Pet Plan, Many Pets, Agria, and Tesco were all mentioned by consumers as insurance providers they currently use. In contrast to pet food, where consumers tend to prioritise quality, many pet owners opt for the most affordable healthcare options.

“I have four pets, so insuring them would cost as much as a mortgage.”

In-Store or Online?

For pet food, attendees generally preferred the in-person shopping experience, especially at events like dog shows or at stores like Pets at Home. However, for those ordering food online, they cited the convenience of automatic subscriptions that ensure timely deliveries.

When it comes to pet toys, attendees were split. Some preferred online shopping for ease and convenience, while others didn’t mind buying toys in-store as their dogs didn’t have strong preferences.

“My dog destroys a lot of toys, so it’s quicker to get them online.”
“We buy food online, but toys we get anywhere.”

Brand Sponsor Videos

Consumer insight is crucial for brands seeking to better understand their audience and strengthen their brand presence. At Crufts, we produced 30-second videos for sponsors like Royal Canin and ButterBox, designed to amplify their visibility and showcase key product offerings. The opportunity was there to speak directly to their customers, as they were interacting with the stand and purchasing products, making impactful market research videos.

The footage of their stand, worked in with consumer vox pops, created an engaging video. It not only showcased their impact at the event, as well as how they resonate with their customers.

Leveraging consumer insight in this way is a powerful tool for brands. It not only amplifies their message but also fosters a deeper connection with their target audience, ultimately driving engagement and growth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our time at Crufts highlighted the power of real-time consumer insights. The Vox Pops interviews provided valuable data on pet food, insurance, and shopping habits, helping brands understand consumer preferences. For sponsors like Royal Canin and ButterBox, incorporating this feedback into marketing boosts engagement and strengthens brand connections. Ultimately, this market research helps brands stay competitive and grow in the pet industry.
