Concept Testing With Consumer Video

Whether you are an established brand or new to the market, launching a new product carries risks. To ensure success when bringing products to market, consumer videos about the product can inform at the concept phase and then be used to sell-in to stakeholders.

As experts in consumer research, we believe concept testing videos with real reactions is what can give you the understanding and assurance on how the market will receive them. From initial concept testing, to rebrand launch or using reactions to generate awareness on social media, using consumer video can help this product launch a success.

Step 1: Initial Concept Testing

Testing concepts is important when bringing new products to the market. This can be an initial stage when they have a physical concept to test but the product hasn’t been fully developed.

For a well-known laundry detergent company, we tested the smells of a new product concept that they were developing. We went international, reaching their consumers not only in London but in Paris too.

After being sent the product concepts, we spoke to a diverse range of consumers, all primary household shoppers, and asked them to test two different scents.

Respondents shared:

  • Emotional responses and memories tied to the scent
  • Their guesses on ingredients
  • Whether they’d buy it and when they’d use it (e.g. winter vs summer)

Our team crafted an engaging discussion guide and delivered punchy, shareable vox pops. These videos were shown at  a conference to launch the new fragrances. The reactions were short, snappy and engaging, making a memorable video of concept testing to stakeholders.

Step 2: Consumer Video, Concept Testing Cross-Markets

Our concept testing videos capture genuine consumer reactions – which can be such a valuable asset in early-stage development to know which direction to take the concept in.

We recently partnered with global brands Reposado, DeLeon and  21 Seeds, to test concepts for them. The goal was to get real feedback from their U.S. target audience before a potential market launch.

We recruited a diverse mix of respondents, including LGBTQ+ and African American consumers,  from various states in the US. We made sure to have a mix of people who were loyal brand followers, and others who were unfamiliar to the brand. We opted for video diaries to be able to reach participants who lived in different points in the US.

Each participant recorded video feedback on:

  • Their first impressions of the concept visuals
  • Predicted taste and drinking occasions
  • Price point perceptions
  • Whether they would personally buy it

These videos helped our client refine their branding and assess market fit. The consumer concept testing ultimately improved their pitch to stakeholders.

Step 3: Rebrand Consumer Testing

Even the most well known brands and logos need an update. Clients come to us to test their new branding on both their current consumers and  consumers they want to target.

A well-known car insurance company came to us with an exciting rebrand initiative. They wanted to use consumer video to test new logo designs and slogans with their current and potential customers.

To do so, we recruited customers from this insurance company as well as 4 competitor companies. We wanted to test how the new branding changed their views on this company. During the research, we showed them logo designs, slogans, pictures and videos and asked them to give their honest opinions on all of them.

For the best consumer brand testing, we tested on memorability as well as emotional response.

These videos provided critical insight into how consumers connected to the new identity of this brand. As branding is a key factor when making purchasing decisions, making sure the re-brand aligned with consumers was vital, showing how important consumer brand testing is to companies.

Step 4: Consumer Product Testing for Marketing

Once a product is ready, testing how people engage with it in real life is crucial. Capturing these reactions on camera is not only great for insight, but for promotion on social media too. Whitworths approached us for a bold social campaign. Using vox pops, they wanted to show people trying ‘unexpected’ food pairings for engaging consumer videos.

We created 3 videos for them to use across their social media:

  1. Pizza – to add Dried Mango & Pistachio
  2. Spaghetti Bolognaise – to add Walnuts
  3. Traditional Meal Deal Sandwiches (BLT, Egg Cress, Chicken Salad) – to add raisins.

We filmed real people on the streets of London as they tried these combos. Their reactions were perfect for social engagement. We delivered short-form content (edited in 9:16 for Instagram Reels and TikTok), which Whitworths used to drive brand awareness and audience interaction.

These videos provided critical insight into how consumers connected to the new identity of this brand. As branding is a key factor when making purchasing decisions, making sure the re-brand aligned with consumers was vital, showing how important consumer brand testing is to companies.

Conclusion

Consumer product testing can be used across all consumer goods, as we’ve helped brands in food & drink, beauty, household goods, health, and even sex toys.

Whether you’re testing a concept, refreshing your branding, or launching something completely new, consumer video can give you insight to ensure success.

They’re clear, visual, and easy to share. Consumer videos for product testing can be perfect for internal decision-making and external marketing content. Most importantly, they help you move forward with confidence, knowing your product actually resonates with the people you’re trying to reach.
