The moments that made 2025, and hopes for 2026
If you had to pick just one moment that made 2025, what would it be?
In December, we asked the public that question, and then followed it with one more: what are your hopes for 2026?
The answers are honest, warm, and revealing – and they paint a picture of what people are holding onto from the past year, and what they want next.
Reflections on 2025
When people look back, they rarely recap a timeline, they go straight to the moments that carried the most feeling. In these reflections on 2025, the standout memories were often tied to pride, relief, or connection, and you could see a clear pattern by life stage.
For younger voices, 2025 was measured in milestones. One student put it plainly: “finishing my A-levels, that was tough and after doing that, I felt quite happy,” and another followed with “A-level summer was great.” Those education moments come with pressure and release, so they naturally become the year end highlights that rise to the top.
Adults, on the other hand, tended to anchor their reflections on 2025 in family and shared experiences. A dad in his 50s talked about taking his daughter to Billie Eilish, while a 60s fishmonger chose “the birth of my second granddaughter.” Even in a year full of noise, it is the personal stuff, big or small, that ends up defining it.
Not every memory was joyful, either. One mum summed up her year in a single line: “lack of money…the year of doom!” It is a reminder that what stands out is not always a highlight, sometimes it is simply what felt heaviest.
Hopes for 2026
When we asked about hopes for 2026, the mood shifted from looking back to looking forward. Instead of one defining moment, people talked about what they want more of, or less of, in everyday life and the same age split showed up again.
Younger respondents leaned towards progress, achievement, and independence. “To do well academically…be the best version of myself” captured that perfectly, alongside hopes for graduating, landing jobs, and building confidence. For many, hopes for 2026 feel like the next step after those reflections on 2025, moving from finishing one chapter to starting another.
Adults spoke both inwardly and outwardly. There were hopes for “health, happiness…more sunshine,” and a desire for steadier national mood too, with one person saying it would be nice to have “some good news roll across the country for once.” Another widened the lens even further: “that the world actually gets a better place…and that my friends and family are happy and healthy.” Taken together, the hopes for 2026 are simple but telling: people want life to feel a bit lighter, a bit kinder, and a bit more secure.
And then, because it is real life, joy still sneaks in. “To dance more,” and “I want more pigs” might raise a smile, but they also say something genuine: alongside stability and success, people are still craving fun.
