The responses from our vox pops research covered a lot of ground, but a few clear threads ran through them.

Escape and relaxation came up more than once: two women in their 30s both love reading for exactly that reason, and a mum summed up her love of holidays as a chance to step away from the daily grind. There is clearly something universal in the need to switch off – especially around this time of the year when we approach the busier summer months.

‘Love reading. It’s just a little bit of an escapism, and it’s just a really nice way to relax.’

Movement featured a lot too. One woman in her 40s runs two or three times a week as part of a larger group that runs to music. A woman in her 20s likes to go to the gym because moving her body simply makes her feel good.

‘I belong to a club that’s all inclusive, so it doesn’t matter if you’re fast or slow. It’s just a bit of fun. We run to music and yeah, it gives me exercise two to three times a week.’

Creativity and self-expression came through as well. A young guy in his late 20s raps and sings because he needs to express himself. Another respondent writes fantasy novels and runs a board game café for similar reasons. And a woman in her 20s lit up when she shared that her favourite pastime was musical theatre, expressing her love for the colour and glamour of it all.

‘I love to rap and sing. I like to express myself, it helps with my confidence. Just being creative and doing what you want.’
